I personally had a bad experience with COAI. I attended the last WCA convention and it was nice. They had a good variety of classes and an ok vendor room. The issue is that both have one relatively costly convention a year. The issue that I have is that neither of them have classes the rest of the year.

Magic, Juggling, Balloon Animals, Puppetry face painting and so on. About a quarter of the shows I do every year are straight black suit no clown face magic shows. 

It is odd but one of the secrets to be a clown that makes a good living is not being a clown some of the time. The more skills you know the more types of shows you can do.
